Most jobs we provide for Masonry repair is due to rusting structural steel. Once the steel has been treated and/or replaced, the type of concrete used for the repair is important for matching texture. If the concrete is not painted then we closely match the texture color of the blend for the patched areas.
Treating Rusting Rebar - Why does it happen?
Spalling is when the steel reinforcement in a concrete structure begins to rust, resulting in a greater volume than the steel. The greater volume creates tensile stresses in concrete which leads to cracking, delamination and spalling of the concrete. Concrete cover affects how soon the spalling is visibly noticeable.
Why is there steel reinforcement in concrete?
Concrete structures have steel reinforcement to help with tension which in turns helps the concrete structure by providing tensile strength. Concrete has a high alkalinity which helps provide a passive resistance layer to the surface of the steel to aid in corrosion prevention.
